We are in the middle of spring in April and in that slow interim period when galleries and institutions prepare for the upcoming Gallery Weekend, which this year takes place on the first weekend in May. We hope that exciting exhibitions and inspiration will soon return to Berlin. (Sorry if that was rude).
Also, everyone being in Milan this year gives me the opposite of a fomo, as I really enjoy following the stories from home and to not being there physically, so thanks to everyone for sharing their highlights.
Besides the common institutions such as Gropius Bau with the exhibition of Vaginal Davis and Hamburger Bahnhof Ayoung Kim which I still want to visit, here are some smaller bites for the upcoming week and some links and books I like and screenshots in my camera roll of interesting things I saw online during doomscrolling.
EXHIBITIONS
Isa Genzken - Basic Research at Galerie Buchholz
Where: Fasanenstrasse 30 (Berlin)
LAST WEEK - Until April 12
The exhibition is showing paintings and works on paper from 1988-1992 and juxtapose the basic research works with the installation OIL VIII, 2007, which Isa Genzken conceived as part of her presentation in the German Pavilion at the 2007 Venice Biennale and which was shown there for the first time.
Conny Maier - Beste Freunde at Ruttkowski;68
Where: Grabbeplatz 2 (Düsseldorf)
Until May 4
“Beste Freunde” continues Conny Maier’s long-standing investigation into the dialectic of domination and subjugation. The central motif of her artistic reflection on power, obedience, and control is the German Shepherd — a dog breed charged with countless connotations and stereotypes.
EVENTS
Karton Salon at NOHO
Where: Mollstrasse 1
When: April 10 from 7PM
Ongoing Screening event with a changing line up of amazing artists organized and curated by Hilka Dirks.
LINKS
Leigh Bowery - As there is a retrospective exhibition at the Tate Modern about one of the most influential artists next to Andy Warhol, who shapeshifted the club scene in NYC and London, and inspired a whole generation of fashion designers - I highly recommend watching the documentary of Charles Atlas’ from 2002 “The Legend of Leigh Bowery” - here on YouTube which I came across in the zero years and ordered on DVD. It gives a great sense about his personality, the collaborators and the time he was within.
Art Angle Podcast - Who’s Behind the Changing Tastes in the Art Market? Interesting episode about the changes in the art market influenced by new generations of buyers.
BOOKS
Rick Rubin “The Creative Act: A Way of Being” - My friend Alice Morey talked about this book, I am excited to read about it. It is available at the Bücherbogen at Savignyplatz.
